Overcoming the Spirit of Fear

I began a new series on my Youtube channel called “Glam With The Word“.
In this series, i share with you all new understanding that i’ve gained on some popular, but highly misunderstood topics in the lives of many Christians.

I thought to myself, if i can share makeup, hair and fashion tips, it is only right that i share essential LIFE giving tips, which is the word of my Lord & Saviour.

Diving right into the first topic, let’s discuss the Spirit of fear! Grab your bible, notepad and pen.

FEAR

F – False
E – Evidence
A – Appearing
R – Real

Types of Fear:

There is two kinds of fear we can have:
1. Reverential Fear (Fear of God) – Deuteronomy 5:29 *
2. Demonic Fear (Fear of Man/ Worldly Fear) – 1st Peter 5:8

*Reverential Fear of God comes with a blessing for not only you, but for your children as well! A lot of us do not understand Gods true character; and so we lack reverential fear for Him. Instead we fear Him as though all He has come to do is punish us.

This mindset and belief is quite thwarted and must be corrected in order to build a true and genuine relationship with God. You cannot receive Love from or give Love to someone you fear, and believe is only here to discipline you.

So, what is Fear ?

Here’s the dictionary’s limited definition of what fear is:

Fear
/ˈfir/
noun
an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

For a long time, i took fear as simply this. An Emotion.
Through studying and revelation, I have come to understand that fear is much more than just an emotion or a feeling we get when a perceived threat is present. Rather, it is a spirit.

A spirit released from the devils camp onto its target to cripple, hinder, and torment the lives of whomever it is released onto. The spirit of fear is the #1 weapon in the devils arsenal that neither believers nor non believers are immune to. In 2nd Timothy 1:7, we are told that fear is indeed a spirit, it reads: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Think about it for a second… fear usually pops up when we think about our futures, when we try to do something new and make a change, whenever we attempt to leave our comfort zones, Boom! there is that crippling spirit again, there to discourage us, and whisper negative demotivating thoughts into our minds. The devil knows that when we are walking in our calling we are dangerous to his mission, therefore he will do anything and everything he can to prevent that from occurring.

As Paul reminds us in the book of Ephesians 6:12, “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Let’s consider the story of Job, and how what He feared most manifested in His life. Once the devil gained permission from God to test Job, he immediately used all of the things Job feared and negative thoughts he had fostered in his mind, and used those thoughts and fears to test him, in hopes that this would completely break him and make him curse God.

“For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me.” – Job 3:25

There is a reason why Jesus commands His children all throughout scripture to not worry or be dismayed or fear. The spirit of God constantly says “fear not” as the first phrase whenever it is about to minister to a person. This is because fear crowds out Gods voice and His truths.

Haggai 2:5 , Lamentations 3:57, Isaiah 54:4, Isaiah 43:1, Isaiah 41:14, Isaiah 41:13, Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah 35:4.

The story of Elijah in 1st Kings 18 & 19 is quite an interesting one because we all know how powerful prophet Elijah was, however in chapter 19 we see how fear overcame him when Jezebel declared a death sentence over his life. He was so afraid that he asked God to take his life. This shows once again that no one is immune to this demonic spirit of fear. We must remain alert and remember Romans 8:15.

This powerful book i read by John Ramirez called Destroying Fear, taught me a lot about how the spirit of fear operates, and its sources. I highly suggest you purchase this book and read it!

According to Mr. Ramirez, here are four sources of the spirit of fear in our lives:

Sources of Fear:

1. Childhood
2. Teen Years
3. Young Adult
4. Adulthood

The Holy Spirit:

We need to rebuild our relationships with the Holy Spirit in order to break off this stronghold of fear.

The bible tells us in John 14:26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

As Jesus ascended to Heaven, He left us a helper and comforter, the Holy Spirit, to guide and direct us, and remind us of the word of God. The Holy Spirit being present in our lives is essential! As He is able to remind us of the truth when the enemy tries to whisper lies to us with that spirit of fear. We must try our best to not drive the Holy Spirit from us by grieving Him through sin – Isaiah 63:10 .

Romans 8:9, Ephesians 3:14, 16-17 ; Psalm 51:11 , Matthew 3:11, Matthew 12:32, john 14:26.

How do you get the Holy Spirit to come into your life?
The bible tells us that we simply have to seek and ask God for His Holy Spirit, and He would give it to us. Luke 11:13 ; Acts 1:8.
Ensure your body is a temple the Holy Spirit can dwell in comfortably!

How to Overcome the Spirit of Fear:

  1. We must renounce this spirit from our lives completely through prayer
    – Take back all legal rights and territory you have given to the enemy to operate in your life.
    2nd Corinthians 10:3-5
  2. We must deal with our inner being – self concept, self image & identity
    – How do you see, think and speak about yourself?
    – Rebuke verbal curses from people around you – parents, friends, and even strangers
    – Tame your tongue and guard your heart – Proverbs 18:21
    – Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people
  3. Declare Gods truths of how He sees you over your life daily!
    – This is very important because as we go about our day, we may encounter many people and situations that the enemy may use to try to throw us off course. However, when you have reminded yourself of who you are in Christ, the Holy Spirit will help you fight off whatever the enemy is trying to send your way!
    – I Highly recommend this book: Godfessions by Goke Coker for your biblical daily affirmations.
  4. Your mind is a place of Territory that can be conquered! Whoever has control over your mind controls your actions, thoughts and emotions that will either move you forward or backward.
    – Ephesians 6:10-20 ; Romans 12:2 ; John 14:27 ; John 16:33

In conclusion, as children of God we should not fear. Go after your vision and dreams because really and truly, nothing and no one can stop you except you! If you decide to allow the spirit of fear cripple you.

And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will be its glory within.’

Zechariah 2:5 NIV

God’s protection will always be with you! You are more than a conquerer!

God bless you all xx
