Overcoming the Winter Blues

This year spring really feels like some fantasy we all are day dreaming about. It’s honestly taking so long for the weather to get warmer, and then let’s not forget the random snow fall we had earlier this month. To make things worse, i’ve come down with the most annoying cold. At this point i am simply over it, and in dire need of a tropical vacation; But until my schedule permits to book one, i’ll just have to keep wearing my turtlenecks and hope for the best.

I never really understood the term ‘Winter Blues’ until i experienced it for myself. Feeling unproductive and just irritable because of the lack of sunlight and social activities. Constantly feeling tired and just down. I did some research and discovered ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ aka SAD (what an accurate acronym), and i had an Aha! moment.

So here are some things i’ve been doing to get through these brutal winter months:

  1. Being More Active: I’ve really been trying my best to get out of the house more often this winter. Meeting up with friends for lunch/dinner, going to the gym close by instead of working out at home. Basically anything that that forces me to move from the comfort of my bed. There’s literally like 4/5 hours of sunshine in a day during winter, so its important to take in some of that lovely Vitamin D even tho your fingers feel like they might fall off in the process.
  2. Eating Clean: To be honest i recently just started doing this, i mean like just a week ago. And i wish i started a lot earlier in the year because maybe, just maybe, my immune system would have been a lot stronger to fight off this damn cold! But i’m really enjoying eating cleaner, i feel a lot lighter and not as bloated as i usually get which is awesome! I’ve been incorporating lots of veggies in my meals, and when i eat my carbs, i try to eat smaller portions. I’ll elaborate on my new eating routine on a different post.
  3. Keep your environment Hella Bright: I can’t stress this enough! I keep my blinds open 24/7. I love light! I love waking up to the sun in my face. It immediately puts me in a good mood, and i feel like i can take on the day. During winter, the sun tends to rise later and sets earlier, which is high key annoying but i like to keep my room light on to mimic natural light if I’m unable to go out that day.
  4. Be Social: Our social lives die down quite a bit during winter. Hosting or attending activities like slumber parties or game nights are great, and can really help your mood. Keep in touch and reach out to friends/family, make sure they are doing okay.

All in all, i can’t wait for Spring/Summer! I’m currently trying to plan some activities for this summer because it dare not be a boring one haha!

What are your plans this upcoming spring/summer? And what tip do you plan to incorporate to overcome the winter blues?

See you next week! Xx

Lovely post. I kind of miss snow/winter etc. All we have here is the scourging sun and seldom rain.
